So you don’t have to worry about having any difficulties creating a blog right now following my guide. It only takes about 15-20 minutes. It’ll seem confusing at first but after reading my tutorial. You’ll be able to set up your blog in no time.

How To Start A Blog

Getting a Hosting Plan and Domain Name

To start a blog, the first two (2) essential things you are going to need is a domain name and a web hosting plan. You can usually get your domain names through the website hosting plan (comes together in a package).

I would recommend you to use Hostgator because they are a well-known company with great page load speed and 99.99% uptime (very reliable). This is one of the major reasons why I picked them.

Let’s head over to Hostgator now. Choosing the “Hatchling” plan is good enough for new users. You can always upgrade later on if you want more advanced features. Click “Sign Up Now” below the selected plan. Then, you will be directed to the registration page.

  1. Choosing a Domain name; find a suitable domain name for your blog. Try your best to register (.com) sites only as it allows you to rank better in search engines. It also depends on the user and the niche. Click here to read my guide in choosing your perfect domain name.
  2. Choosing your preferred billing cycle; Select the one (1) year hosting plan would be enough for now. But it is solely up to you to choose the number of years you want to sign up for (the longer the billing cycle, the cheaper). Then continue to fill in the rest of the details (Username and Security PIN).
  3. Billing information; Please fill in these details carefully as we do not want any problems with the verification process.
  4. Additional services; They don’t worth your money, you can go ahead and uncheck all of them. If you change your mind or find them useful later on, you can add them back. In my experience, I doubt you will.
  5. Coupon Code; My coupon code should already be there for a 25% discount. If it’s not, here it is INTELWIZARD.
  6. Order details; Double check everything from top to bottom to see if everything is filled in correctly and finally, process your order and make your payment.
  7. Check your email after the order has been processed you will receive an email. Follow the instructions of the email.
  8. Congratulations! You have successfully created your own personal website (not a blog yet).
  9. You will receive your second email notifying you that your account is ready. Hurry and login to start your blogging career!

Installing WordPress On Your Website

Finally, it’s about time you get your WordPress installed. This is where your website is “born” (created), don’t just stop learning how to start a blog here. Keep reading…

If you’re already logged in, on screen right now will be your personal Hostgator control panel (cpanel). Scroll down and click on “QuickInstall” under the (Software/Services) category.

After that, you will be directed to Mojomarketplace.com. Pay attention to the banner on the left side of the page (Popular Installs).

Click on WordPress, then scroll down and install WordPress for FREE. You will have to fill in the details of your Blog Title, Username & etc.
Note* Leave the (Install/Path/Here) empty to prevent your WordPress getting installed at the wrong place.

After that, there will be a loading bar at the top of the page. Wait for it to finish, it won’t take long (the installation) and you’ll be notified that WordPress has been successfully installed on your website.

QuickInstall Completion Example

Now click go to My Installs from the QuickInstall menu. Then click the  Admin Login button.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed WordPress onto your website! That wasn’t so hard was it?

Customizing Your WordPress

Now that you have installed WordPress, login to your account (WordPress) to start setting up your blog. You can find your newly generated password in your email inbox.

Now the first thing you should do immediately after login is changing your password. To do that, go to “Users” at the menu and click “Edit”. Scroll to the bottom and you will see it. (Don’t forget to SAVE CHANGES)

Now, you can start of by changing the name of your blog. Like mine is Intel Wizard. Then click save.

Optimizing Your Website for Search Engines

Google or any other search engines hates two (2) things, messy links and spammy comments. Here’s an example of a messy link:

http://yourblog.com/2003/08/topic-abc/author-johnny/how-to-start-a-blog

The tidy way should be: http://yourblog.com/how-to-start-a-blog

To do that, head over to “Settings”, then click on “Permalinks”. Use the “Custom Structure”” option, and key this in =>   /%category%/%postname%/

As for spammy comments, groups of people tend to automated spam comments on your blog. They’re usually advertising or trying to increase their site’s traffic.

To avoid that, make sure to select the “comments must be held in moderation” and “comments must be manually approved” option. Head to “Settings” and then click on “Discussion”.

Now there are a few plugins you should download. Remember to download the right one.

To install plug-ins, here are the steps: Head over to “Plugins” tab. Then click on “Add New”. At the top of the screen. Click on it.

Then upload the plugin files that you have downloaded. You should download the following plugins:

Yoast SEO, Google Analytics by YoastBackWPup, iThemes SecurityContact Form 7, Digg Digg, AWeber Web Forms, Pretty Link Lite, W3 Total Cache.

Configuring SEO Plugins

After downloading the recommended plugins above. This will be a very important part of knowing how to start a blog, further optimizing it.

Let’s head over to the “SEO” menu at the left side of your screen. You will have to do some signing up, get the verification meta values and place them in the correct forms.

Also try to think of a few good titles and metas for later on, select (check) all four options on page the first page of Yoast SEO you are seeing. Then save your settings.

You should also take advantage of Google+ as it can further help boost your ranking in search engines. So if you do not have a profile, create one right now.

Before moving on, head back to “SEO” menu. Go to “Title & Metas” sieve through slowly to find “Taxonomies” and then select (check) the options to NOINDEX the pages (All of them). Lastly, save your changes.If you already have a profile, copy the URL of your Google+ page, then head back to your WordPress settings. Click “Users” then “Edit” (the page when you changed your password). Once there, paste your Google+ profile URL so that Google+ is integrated into your blog.

Finally, copy “%%sitename%% %%sitedesc%%” and then paste it in “Taxonomies” under all “Meta description template”.

Integrating Social Networking Sites (Traffic Generation)

Head over to “Global Configurations” and integrate your Twitter account. Create one here if you don’t have one yet. Don’t worry about the other settings. Leave them as default will do for now.

Uncheck all of the sharing options that you don’t use (for LIKE buttons”. Technically, the important ones are Google+, Facebook and Twitter.

Getting Google Analytics to Track Your Site

Integrating the following will give access to all of the Google Analytics stats like page views, traffic source, number of visitors, etc. You can go over to Settings and click on Google Analytics. It allows you to fill in your web property identification (ID). Don’t forget to save changes.

Setting Up Blog Securities

Who doesn’t want a safer environment and never have to worry about hackers? Let’s run through how to increase your blog security.

Knowing how to start a blog is not enough, you have to know how to defend your blog against malware too.

Go to “Dashboard” in your “Security” tab, check (select) all boxes that are RED and YELLOW in color. Those are marked high and medium priority.

Try to fix as many as possible as every point helps tighten your blog’s security.

Some points require you to re-log in. Make sure you clean up whatever that is weak.

Backing Up Your Blog

You should have your blog/website backed up just in case, head over to “Backup” menu and click on “Add New Job”.

There are few settings you can choose, based on which is more convenient for you.

Then head on to “Schedule”, choose your preferred time for automatic backup to occur. The default for daily backup is at three, you can leave it as it is if it doesn’t bother you. Don’t forget to save your changes.

Then go to “Files” and make sure you configure it to back up plugins too.

You should also set the maximum to zero in order to minimize the size of the backed-up file. (Reduce heavy backups)

Now that we have a blog that is fully optimized for search engines, integrated with social media, secure and with daily backup cycle. We can start setting up your Contact page.

Setting up a Contact Page

Contact form allows your readers to get in touch with you. Go to the “Pages” tab then click “Add New”, and then choose the “Contact Me” option.

You can write something like this in the provided blank space: Please do not hesitate to send me an email if you have any questions. I will try my best to reply as soon as possible. Thanks!”

Installing a Simple and Mobile Responsive Theme

Now, learning how to start a blog also means you have to make your blog responsive everywhere. Whether it is viewed from a phone, tablet and etc. So let’s get on with it, head to “Appearances and Themes”. Then click “Install Themes”.

There will be plenty of free themes to choose. You can take your time and see which theme suits your blog best.

Make sure it’s not too complicated and most importantly mobile responsive, it’s a major traffic lost if the site’s not compatible for mobile viewers. Activate your chosen theme once installed.

Later on, if you want more selection of themes (Paid Themes). Head over to ThemeForest.net, there thousands of themes available there.

Paid themes do help your site to rank better. It’s about $40 on average.

Side Bar Setup

To set up your blog’s side bar, head over to “Appearance and Widgets” menu. There is a selection of options to choose for display. Again, it’s solely up to you to decide which widget fits your blog best.

Setting Up an E-Mail Subscription Account (AWeber)

Allowing readers to subscribe to your blog is a MUST. That’s how you build loyalty readers.

You can sign up for an AWeber account here. Log in after that.

(MailChimp is an alternative to AWeber plus it’s FREE). Try to use Aweber if you can fork out a little more, it has more features like helping you track your traffic source and more.

Once logged in, create an email list, sign up form.

After that, choose a decent template of your choice. Remember to change your template’s width to 320 pixels. Use some colors to make it attractive.

Then you will notice a box that prompts you to enter text, just fill in something like this…

“Please subscribe to this blog. We promise never to spam you”. Then format your text, make it neat.

Remember to save your form before exiting.

Create an Email Subscription Box

If you want to know how to start a blog, you have to know how to keep it up too.

First, head to Settings and click on AWeber Web Form. Once you log in you can get the code it provides and type it in when prompted.

Second, navigate over to Widgets. Find the AWeber Form and drag it to the very top. As always, remember to save!

You now have an email subscription form set up, and once visitors begin to add their information you can start marketing to them.
